“The Art of Getting By” is a slow story about a young George Zinavoy (Freddie Highmore) who is in his last year of high school. He has pretty much not worked a day of his senior year and missed assignments have caught up with him and he is in danger of not graduating. Amidst his complicated school career he is befriended by Sally (Emma Roberts), a wild girl who seems attracted to George’s spirit.
The two begin hanging out and when George believes there is more than a friendship between them Sally puts on the brakes and loses his friendship in the process. When he realizes that he may not be able to go to college the next year and that his Mother would be very disappointed in him, George takes on a huge task. In order for him to graduate with his class he must complete every missed assignment and pass. If he can do so in the matter of two weeks he can walk across the stage with his fellow peers and move onto the next phase of his life.
With Sally out of his way as a distraction George begins his work. Will he finish in time and prove his teachers wrong? “The Art of Getting By” is a boring story about a boy who is lost and somehow finds himself when he finds love. Or what they make you think is love. There is a strong distraction with the actors, not sure if it is from the lack of chemistry of the fact that the boy who played ‘August Rush’ (Freddie Highmore) grew up overnight. There was not much to like from this film. The dialogue was bland; the story was lame and felt nothing like what real life is all about. “The Art of Getting By” is not doing a good job at getting by in the box office…I would look for your nearest exit.
